Back in 2012,we identified six “Big Ideas” for transforming Alexandra Palace.
The scope of the HLF project includes aspects of both Ideas 2 and 6 with work planning on reawakening and reopening the currently inaccessible BBC Studios and derelict Victorian Theatre as well as improving the East Court and its external approach.
Why are we doing it?
Our aim is to make the Palace a more successful, diverse and truly-accessible place for everyone to enjoy. In order to achieve this we need to make it more financially and environmentally sustainable. By using spaces to generate income, we will be able to ensure that the Palace is self-sufficient and is conserved for future generations.
How long will it take?
Not all of these initiatives will happen at once. Some may take a number of years to realise. Our intention is that each Big Idea can stand independently from each other and is able to be implemented on their own. However, like pieces of a jigsaw, they will all fit together over time to create a picture of the Alexandra Palace of the future. Currently we have two stages that are moving forward already including our HLF bid to restore the historic BBC Studios, Theatre and East Court and our work exploring the market potential for a hotel on the existing Panorama Room site at the South West end of the building which has sweeping views over London.
How are we proposing to conserve the historic building?
A Conservation Management Plan (‘CMP’) was prepared by specialist conservation architecture practice, Donald Insall Associates, early in the masterplanning process to guide and provide advice on proposals for the future use of the building. The CMP identifies the parts of the building which are most historically significant as well as the elements which are most vulnerable. In addition to the overarching plan, we have commissioned detailed condition surveys on both the Victorian Theatre and BBC Studios to support preparation of the HLF bid. 2012 Consultation results
Great News: 87% of respondents supported our plans!
We received over 2,000 responses to our consultation, which was held in May/June this year. Thank you to everyone who contributed.
During the consultation:
- 21,000 consultation booklets were printed and distributed
- details of the Regeneration plans and consultation survey were emailed to over 8,000 business and consumer contacts
- we asked for your thoughts via FaceBook, Twitter and our website
- a public exhibition was set up and available for viewing during the consultation period
- we met with a range of local resident groups, local businesses, schools and community groups to outline and discuss our plans
- we delivered three specialist workshops to engage with minority groups within the Borough.
