On 16th October 2011 Alexandra Palace welcomed, Beto Perez, the creator of the Zumba® program, led a Zumbathon® charity event for 3,800 people at the North London destination venue. This was to support breast cancer research and community outreach programs as part of Zumba® Fitness’ Party in Pink™ campaign. The event raised £130,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Cure Cancer @ UCLH and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Global Promise Fund.
The Zumbathon event hosted by Beto at Alexandra Palace was arranged by Cure Cancer @ UCLH founder, Carole Sobell from London, a spokesperson for the Party in Pink Zumbathon charity campaign. “As a breast cancer survivor and Zumba enthusiast myself, I was so excited to be joining the Party in Pink campaign and arranging this event. It was a perfect excuse to get over 3,800 people to join the party and celebrate to raise money for such a good cause.”
To further assist in raising money for breast cancer research, legendary music artist, Wyclef Jean, teamed up with Zumba Fitness to create a video encouraging people to join the Party in PinkTM global movement and help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research in conjunction with Komen and its global non-profit partners. Also featured in the video are Zumba® Fitness creator, Beto, and Zumba® instructors, Gina Grant and Tanya Beardsley.
In addition, Wyclef teamed up with Zumba Fitness to leverage its music platform by launching his latest single, “Historia” as the theme song for the Party in PinkTM campaign. Available now, 10-percent of every iTunes download of “Historia” will be donated to Susan G. Komen and its global non-profit partners. Wyclef performed Historia live on stage with Beto and Zumba instructors at the London event on Sunday 16th October.
Celebrity faces Amy Childs, Charlie Brooks, Gail Porter, Tameka Empson and Rachel Stevens attended the event and took part in the Zumba fitness concert.
Chris Askew, Chief Executive of Breakthrough Breast Cancer comments, “We are truly excited to be the beneficiary of Zumba Fitness’ Party in Pink campaign in 2011. We’ve seen the huge success it has achieved in the USA, and we hope that people across the UK will embrace it with similar enthusiasm. It’s a great way for friends, family and colleagues to come together, have some fun and support a great cause. The money raised through Zumba’s Party in Pink campaign will enable us to continue with our life-saving research, campaigning and education work. Through this work we believe passionately that breast cancer can be beaten.”
