Primary school cycle racing comes to Alexandra Park

Guest post by Paul Wheeler

Alexandra Park was the brilliant setting for the finale of the 2018 Haringey Schools Cycling League last month.

A total of 39 riders from four primary schools raced in 30-degree heat on the site of the former Alexandra Park Racecourse.

Current champions North Harringay Primary cemented their lead at the top of the trophy standings. But Risley Avenue were not about to let them have it all their own way, and won the most points for the day after a dramatic finish in the pursuit relay.

St Aidan’s Primary had a good day, with an emphatic win in the Boys 24” and taking 2nd place in the Boys 26”. They just missed out in their pursuit relay, which was won by South Harringay.

The event brought to an end a successful season for the League, which saw 250 riders from six Haringey primary schools compete in roller-racing, cyclo-cross, MTB, and grass track racing.

The Haringey Schools Cycling League has been running monthly races in local parks and cycling venues for the past six years.

In that time, we’ve had more than 1,300 children at our race events.  They develop their confidence and bike-handling skills whilst having great fun competing with other schools.

We also organise training days at iconic cycling venues such as the Herne Hill Velodrome and the Lee Valley Velopark.

Taking part in the League is easy. It is open to any competent girl or boy cyclist from years 4, 5 and 6. Riders don’t need to have raced before, and don’t even have to bring bikes (we provide bikes and helmets). Events are normally held on the first Friday of each month. See the Haringey Schools Cycling League website https://haringeycyclingleague.org for more details.
