Aarron Lee (Age 13) wins at Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards. Amateur Ice Skating Club

When the Borough’s top sporting talent took centre stage for the sixth annual Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards at Alexandra Palace on 29th November, there was a triumph for the superb Palace Ice Rink. Young skater Aaron Lee was named Junior Sports Performer of the Year. This was an especially significant win for this promising sports star, as he is due to celebrate his 13th Birthday on Monday 3rd December.

The Haringey Celebrating Sports Awards recognises sporting excellence, diligent coaching, volunteering and performance through 12 award categories with an additional Legacy Award to mark this special Olympic year. The event was hosted by Richard Sumary, Former Chair of the London 2012 Forum, with Haringey Mayor Cllr David Browne and special guests, Paralympic Volleyball player Vicky Widdup, and Tottenham Hotspur left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, presenting the awards.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Richard Watson, said:
”These are challenging times but the council will make every effort to support the growth of sport in the Borough and we will continue to work with partners and sports clubs to nurture talent and get more people of all ages active and involved.”

Junior Sports Performer of the Year: Aarron Lee, Alexandra Palace Amateur Ice Skating Club: Aaron has fabulous ice skating skills and is the current British Champion. Indeed he has won the British solo ice dance championships consecutively since 2008, each year entering a higher level and age group. He is completely dedicated to his sport, practising six days out of seven for several hours a day often starting at 6am. Aarron is an inspiration to younger skaters and much liked by children and adults for his obvious love of the sport, his kind and gentle nature and his focus. Aaron is a great role model and very likely to be a star for this country in the future.

We are proud and pleased to see one of the young skaters using our fantastic rink become such a rising star in the sports world.  Aarron also won the title British Champion -Novice Men’s Figure Skating this week and we wish Aarron every success for what promises to be a sparkling  future.  The Alexandra Palace rink and its skating club has a significant reputation for producing excellent young talent, with some of our skaters recently snapped up to perform professionally with international casts of Disney on Ice.  We are looking forward to our Christmas Pantomime, Sleeping Beauty on Ice, which will showcase these stars.  Audiences will also be able to see Aarron skate during the interval at some performances.’  Jeremy Walton, Ice Rink Manager.
